Motorcycle Road Trips in the fall

Travels with Harley

Motorcycle road trips are great all year round, but especially during the fall, and now that summer is beginning to wind down, we thought we would share some of the best places in the country to get on your bike for Motorcycle road trips while enjoying the cavalcade of colors as the leaves start to change their hue.

Although the peak time to see the autumn leaves is between the end of September through the middle of October, we thought we would share a few Motorcycle road trips suggestions so that you can plan your ride.

Jim and I have had the pleasure of riding through the northeastern states when we rode with other riders on the New England Trail Blazer ride last year. Although autumn hadn’t officially begun yet, we were able to catch a glimpse of early fall with the leaves just starting to turn. If you want to enjoy motorcycle road trips during the fall, New England is certainly a great place to start.

The Scenic Route 100 in Vermont is stunning and one of the best places to start your motorcycle road trips in the fall. This popular tourist destination is known as one of the most, if not the most, scenic drives in the area and is part of what is called the, “Skiers Highway.” The byway is 138 miles long and takes you through Rochester, Hancock, Granville, Bridgewater, Ludlow and Plymouth as well as a few other towns that include Stratton, Jamaica, Londonderry, and Stockbridge. If you want to enjoy Motorcycle road trips this fall, the Scenic Route 100 should really be on your list.

The Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee offer travelers a visual feast anytime of the year, but especially when the leaves start to fall. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has several Motorcycle Road Trips that you can take to enjoy the colors of autumn. Spend a few days in Eastern Tennessee on Motorcycle road trips and stay in a delightful B & B so that you can wake up to a gorgeous fall morning in the Smokies.

One of our favorite rides in Tennessee is Cades Cove. Most of our friends enjoy this trip because the 31 mile drive is located in the western Tennessee section of the National Park and is the perfect place to enjoy early fall colors. From historic buildings to breath-taking fall landscapes and wildlife, Cades Cove should not be missed if you are planning motorcycle road trips this fall.

If you haven’t started planning your motorcycle road trips for autumn, better get a move on!

If you are reading this, you probably go on your fair share of motorcycle road trips, which means that you and I don’t necessarily seek out the same things that others do. Those of us who enjoy a good ride want to find places that have parking, good food, and a place to soak your body after a long trip.

Located in Glenwood Springs, in between Vail and Aspen, the Sunshine Ridge Guest House on Four Mile Road is extremely biker friendly, so much so that there is plenty of covered parking with an oversized outdoor parking pad as well. If you are searching for Weekend motorcycle accommodation for a group, this is the place as it has six bedrooms, four full baths, two half baths and can house up to 16 people. It even has a pool table and a gourmet kitchen.

A couple who enjoy helping other riders when it comes to Weekend motorcycle accommodation owns Duckpond Cottage in Gunnison. Located on Chinook Trail, The Engels hope to establish a motorcycle client base with their two bedroom, two bath and loft cottage. There is a private pond and plenty of parking, not to mention tons of activities in the area.

If you prefer hotels when you are looking for Weekend motorcycle accommodation, check out Water Wheel Inn in Gunnison. Equipped to handle bikers and their toys, the Water Wheel Inn on W. Highway 50 is comfy and cozy. You can stay in a room, opt for a suite, or cabin where you can prepare your own meals. Gunnison has some great trails and roads for riding, and plenty of places to curb your appetite.

Leadville has lots of Weekend motorcycle accommodation whether you are looking for a good B & B, such as the McGinnis Cottage Inn Bed and Breakfast, or want to stay in something historical such as the Delaware Hotel. Although we both love B & B’s, the Delaware Hotel sounds like an incredible place when it comes to Weekend motorcycle accommodation. Built in 1886, the Delaware is located on Harrison Ave and even has its own museum. There really is no need to leave after a road trip during the day as the Delaware Hotel has an onsite restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.

If you are searching for Weekend motorcycle accommodation that has plenty of charm, book your stay at the Redstone Inn in Redstone. Established back in 1902, the Redstone Inn is on Redstone Blvd and is a tiny little mountain village that is actually on the National Register of Historic Places. The onsite restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner offering some mouthwatering dishes such as baked brie and toasted pumpkinseed pesto grilled Norwegian salmon.

We can’t end this weeks blog until we mention the historic Strater Hotel in Durango. This grand old hotel has been in business since 1887 and is a really fun place to stay, best of all, it is motorcycle friendly.

Looking for affordable Weekend motorcycle accommodation, doesn’t have to be a chore, and can actually be fun, as long as you do your research.
